There comes a time in our life when we start asking ourselves if we are living our purpose, if we could do more and be more, and how to improve the quality of our life. More often than not, the answer is always yes, we could be and do more and enrich our lives, but we usually don’t know where to start, we are afraid we have missed our chances and that it is too late. The good news is that it is never too late to learn something new and to make a fresh start. Here are a few simple suggestions on how to improve your life, starting now.
- Improve your relationship with yourself
If there was only one thing to do to make your life better, this would be it. Self-love is the alpha and omega of a good and happy life. A lot of women suffer from lack of self-esteem and have really negative images of themselves, based on their less than perfect bodies. Building a good self-esteem base will make your life so much easier, it will tame the inner critic, bring you more peace and let you appreciate yourself more. Once you can do this, move on to loving yourself: your mind, body, emotions and spirit. It won’t happen overnight, but with daily practice, you will strengthen the self-love muscle and everything will change. You will function from the place of being your own best friend.
- Improve your relationship with others
We are often so self-absorbed we don’t even notice other people and their lives. Nobody has it easy, everybody deals with pain, change and growth. We have much more in common with other people than we realize. Find ways to meet more people, talk to your neighbors, catch up with estranged family members, remember old friends and find them, find some new friends, find your own tribe – think of your interests and hobbies, search for groups and communities and connect with people who are similar to you. Respect everyone and truly listen to people, everyone has some wisdom to share.
- Learn new things
It has been scientifically proven that the only way to stop our brain from deterioration is to never stop learning new things and challenging our brain. The most beneficial activities for brain growth are learning new languages and learning how to play a musical instrument. Games like chess and crosswords are also good. Learning new skills that will be of service both to us and our community can take our life to a whole different level, like taking rehabilitation courses, nutrition courses, positive psychology or acupuncture.
- Stay healthy
This one is obvious but still not easy to do. Everyone knows they should eat healthy, exercise, stay away from TV and junk food, be moderate with alcohol and quit smoking, but it is a challenge to keep the healthy habits going. It is not easy to stay fit and maintain a healthy diet, but it is so worth it, especially as we get older. Make health your priority and think about long term effects rather than immediate satisfaction. Take up holistic health activities, something your whole being will benefit from, including your mind and spirit, activities like yoga, qigong, meditation or some other spiritual practice.
The only person who can improve your life is you and once you realize this, think what you would like your life to look like, set some goals and take positive action towards them, step by step. You don’t have to do it alone, build a community, a support group, and work toward the highest good for all involved. You won’t regret it.
