Cinnamon is a common spice that most of us have sitting in our pantry at home, but did you know that it used to be regarded ashighly valuable and rare in the days of Ancient Egypt? It was incredibly expensive, and was used as a perfuming agent and as a treatment for a wide variety of medical problems. Nowadays, it’s so simple to incorporate cinnamon into our diets! Here are just a few health benefits of this spice:
- Healthy Heart: Adding cinnamon to your diet may help reduce your risk for heart disease! In a study by Penn State, researchers found that eating a diet rich in cinnamon helped reduce the amount of fat (triglycerides) in the blood after eating a fatty meal. Cinnamon has also been linked to reducing bad (LDL) cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels!
- Fighting Infections: An active ingredient found in cinnamon, cinnamaldehyde, contains antifungal and antibacterial properties, which can help fight against bacterial and fungal infections! In one 1995 study, researchers found that cinnamon oil could help treat respiratory tract infections that are caused by fungi.
- Neurodegenerative Disease Prevention: Cinnamon helps protect the functioning of our brain and nervous system, which may help prevent or slow down the degenerative processes of diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Parkinson’s. Cinnamon has been linked to inhibiting tau protein buildup in the brain, which is a marker for Alzheimer’s disease. In a study that involved mice with Parkinson’s, cinnamon helped protect neurons against degeneration and improved motor function. According to the Rush University Medical Center, cinnamon may even stop the degenerative process of MS!
